If you are shopping for a compact utility tractor, you will undoubtedly run into the term “hydraulic GPM“. What in the world is that? And why should you care about it?
Tractor hydraulic system capability is measured in 2 ways.
PSI, or ‘Pounds per Square Inch’ of pressure. Pressure in it’s simplest tractor form, is the amount of force that a hydraulic pump can create to move fluid.
The other term, GPM or ‘Gallons Per Minute’ is the scale of measurement used to determine how much hydraulic fluid a tractor will flow in a given amount of time.
A tractor’s ability to lift heavy loads on a 3 point hitch or a front loader is crucial. After all, You don’t buy a tractor to go on Sunday drives. You need to get work done, and you want it done now!
So lets wrap this up…
You could push tractor hydraulic fluid thru a straw at 1,000 PSI. Ever try lifting a hay bale with a straw? Exactly! GPM gets the job done!
Heavy Commercial Construction equipment like a skid loader will run an average of 25 GPM. More than most of us need on a regular basis The majority of compact utility tractors today are running between 9 – 11 GPM. Not enough for any big jobs that may come up. Look for something right in the middle, around 14 – 17 GPM.
In the end, you want to be prepared for anything. What if you have a tree go down in a storm? Do you want to be forced to rent a tractor or pay hundred’s of dollars to have a tree moved, because your tractor, the one sitting in the barn. The one you thought was a great deal, doesn’t have enough power to move it out of the driveway? I didn’t think so. Me either.
