Zero Turn Mower Wars. Who has the Best Mowers?

2019-12-05 15.30.50

Welcome to Z Wars!  Our ‘Tractor Wars’  series has been so popular I was inspired to expand our competition into other areas of outdoor power. For This series, we’re putting different Zero Turn Lawn Mowers in heads up competition! Lets find out who is the best.

How Z WARS* works is, we spec each machine in a side by side comparison. Then we test each machine in a real world cutting environment. The winner in each category is highlighted in RED.

We’re kicking things of with residential mowers available at big box stores.

      Cub Cadet                          VS.                 Husqvarna Outdoor

  • CUB CADET ZT1 54                                                         HUSQVARNA Z254
  • 54″ 11 GAUGE STEEL DECK                                         54″ 12 GAUGE STEEL DECK
  • WELDED, FABRICATED DECK                                   STAMPED STEEL DECK
  • LTD LIFETIME DECK SHELL WARRANTY             3 YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY
  • DECK LIFT, FOOT  WITH SPRING ASST.                HAND OPERATED
  • TRANS.   HYDROGEAR ZT2200                                    HYDROGEAR ZT2200
  • 7 MPH FORWARD                                                            6.5 MPH FORWARD
  • TUBE STEEL LTD LIFETIME WARRANTY              PAN FRAME 3 YEAR WARRANTY
  • KOHLER 24HP                                                                   BRIGGS & STRATTON 24HP
  • 18″ HIGH BACK SEAT                                                  15″ HIGH BACK SEAT
  • HEADLIGHTS YES                                                           HEADLIGHTS NO
  • $3099                                                                                    $2799

Drivability: We found the foot operated deck lift on the Cub Cadet to be more operator friendly as you are hands free to lift the deck to get over and round obstacles while moving. The Torque of the Kohler engine on the Ultima was definitely noticeable, although the Briggs and Stratton engine on the Husqvarna seemed to run a bit quieter.

Cut Quality: In heavy grass conditions, The Fabricated deck on the Cub Cadet was the winner hands down. The Z254 did fine on the short manicured lawns but struggled in the thick areas.

Reliability: No problems were experienced in either of the lawn mowers during testing.

Our Conclusion: The Cub Cadet  Ultima ZT1 54 costs nearly $300 more than the Husqvarna ZT254. But… It did win 8 out of the 10 categories above, including a limited lifetime warranty on the frame and deck shell.  If you have a small yard and are able to mow on a regular schedule, the Husqvarna ZT254 is fine.

For those that find value in the limited lifetime warranty coverage. and those of you that have a lot to mow and find yourself mowing it when you can, instead of when you want, We think the Ultima by Cub Cadet is the way to go.

Thanks everybody. Drop us a line and let’s hear your thoughts on this one! Is there a battle that you want to see fought on Out Of The Box ? Drop me a note and we’ll make it happen!

Next time it’s Red VS. Red with Ferris vs. Toro!!
